Does the labor market work for foreign-born persons with disabilities? : A qualitative study of foreign-born persons with visual impairments in the Swedish labor market. (English)
Abstract [en]

This bachelor´s thesis aims to investigate the challenges foreign-born people with visual impairment face in the Swedish labor market, and how they are affected by these challenges to expand knowledge and conspire with inclusion strategies. The empirical data is based on the respondent´s experiences and stories about the subject. The empirical evidence is collected by the qualitative method. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted with foreign-born people with visual impairment who moved to Sweden. Three different theoretical concepts are used to be able to analyze the collected data. The theoretical concepts are indirect discrimination and inclusion-exclusion.

The results of this study showed the first question: What challenges do foreign-born people with visual impairment face in the labor market? The Swedish language is a big challenge because they do not know how to learn due to visual impairment, prejudices against disabled people, the employer´s attitude towards people who have a visual impairment, competition in the labor market, difficulty in finding work due to belonging to an ethnic minority and lack of accessibility. The results showed the second question, how are foreign-born people with visual impairment affected by the challenges they face in the labor market? negative impacts such as depression, a feeling of alienation, mental illness, stress, and poor self-esteem.
