Abstract [en]

The research field of older LGBTQ+ adults is understudied. This systematic review (guided by The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses, [PRISMA], principles) aimed to synthesize qualitative research on the lived experiences of older LGBTQ+ adults (aged 60 years and older). Articles were searched and retrieved from ASSIA, Medline, PsycInfo, and Sociological Abstracts, with additional grey searches through reference lists, Google Scholar, and researchers. Articles (n = 1158) were assessed using the SPIDER (sample, phenomenon of interest, design, evaluation, research type) and SBU (Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Assessment of Social Services) frameworks. Findings from 7 articles (142 LGBTQ+ participants, aged 60–89 years, from Australia, Canada, and the United States) were included in the synthesis and analysed deductively as well as inductively using thematic analysis. The deductive themes were quality of life, resilience, minority joy, minority stress, and stigmatization and discrimination. Inductive themes were coming out, loneliness in identity, feeling unsafe, and meaningful relationships and connections. All themes were represented amongst the included articles. Minority stress was found to disseminate all areas of participants’ lives and affected their quality of life. More high-quality and ethically guided research into the field of older LGBTQ+ adults in other countries is necessary, as this review only had articles from English-speaking white-majority countries

Abstract [sv]

Den deduktiva tematiska analysen innefattade förutbestämda teman livskvalitet (quality of life), resiliens (motståndskraft), minoritetsglädje, minoritetsstress, stigmatisering och diskriminering.
