Berättelsens protagonister är två tonårsflickor vars högsta önskan är att gå ut gymnasiet med bra betyg för att kunna söka till universitetet men vägen dit är kantad av svårigheter och hinder. Det största hindret är de långdragna och smärtsamma menstruationerna med flera dagars skolskolk. Tidigare har en av flickorna varit hos ungdomsmottagningen utan att ha fått remiss till en gynekolog. Tonåringarna har fått för sig att det är något de får leva med. De svåra smärtorna tvingar dem dock till självmedicinering genom att knapra på pappans starka smärtstillande. Parallellt med nutidsplanen berättas den ena protagonistens tidigare liv i Iran. Hon har afghansk bakgrund, men hon är född i Iran, där har hon haft ett hårt liv som barnarbetare, vilket är ett viktigt spår i berättelsen. Parallellberättelsen är en slags spegling av nutidsberättelsen. Det ger en kännedom om karaktären. Men det ger också en förklaring till varför flickornas utveckling ser olika ut. 

Abstract [en]

The story's protagonists are two teenage girls whose highest wish is to graduate from high school with good grades in order to apply to university, but the road there is lined with difficulties and obstacles. The biggest obstacle is the protracted and painful menstruation which means that the girls are forced to skip school. Previously, one of the girls had been to the youth clinic without having been referred to a gynaecologist. The teenagers have realized that it is something they must live with. However, the severe pain forces them to self-medicate by nibbling on their father's strong painkillers. Parallel to the present-day plan, one of the girls' past lives in Iran is told. She has an Afghan background, but she was born in Iran, where she had a hard life as a child laborer, which is an important trace in the story. The parallel story is a kind of reflection of the present-day story. It gives an insight into the character. But it also provides an explanation for why girls' development looks different.
