Protected work title for seminurses - A challenge for goodcare : A critical interview study of logics and legitimacy in social care for elderly individuals. (English)
Abstract [en]
The aim of this study was to examine the decision made by the Swedish government to impose a protected work title for semi-nurses in relation to the social dimensions in elderly care. Considering the challenges faced by elderly care in Sweden in meeting the expanding needs of older people, research suggests that a protected title could potentially be a counterproductive solution for attracting a larger workforce. This study was based on semi-structured interviews conducted within focus groups with elven semi-nurses. The empirical process, using a reflexive method, shed light on macro-level phenomena. The analysis was grounded in two theoretical frameworks: one focusing on the power of the state and the other on institutional isomorphism. In conclusion elderly care is influenced by both social and medical logics, both of which are necessary for providing good care. At the same time, the results suggest isomorphic tendencies towards the medical logic, which can be explained by medicine's higher legitimacy. Lastly, we found that the protected title could potentially reinforce the position of medicine within the organization. Thus reducing the role of social values within elderly care.
