The aim of this study has been to reduce knowledge gaps around the beliefs that professional social workers, police and teachers have about parents’ responsibilities in preventive work with delinquent children and juveniles. This study also aims to investigate what ideas social workers, police and teachers have about their own responsibilities in the preventive work together with parents. The empirical evidence has then been analysed based on KAIMeR-theory and supplemented with theory of professions, as well as with previous research. 

The results indicate the respondents experience parents to have the ultimate responsibility in preventive work, but their opinion then differs as to which profession has the greatest responsibility in preventive work together with parents. Furthermore, the results show that the social workers and teachers of this study share more of the same views on preventive work, the responsibility both professions inherit with their professional role, and the role and responsibilities they believe parents to have. The biggest difference on these views is shown by the police in the study, and the results points to difficulties in cooperation between the professions when the professionals do not share the same views on their professions’ responsibilities and how they should work preventively together with parents of delinquent juveniles. In the end, these difficulties in cooperation could possibly affect the efficiency of helping youth in need.
