Abstract [en]

This study aims to explore how online teaching material designed for the course English 5 in Swedish upper secondary school approaches vocabulary learning. With the lens of intentional vocabulary learning, it analyses exercises that have explicit focus on vocabulary to investigate what intentional strategies can be found in the material. To do so, content analysis was used. The categories used in the content analysis were based on the Technique Feature Analysis, and the frequency of them were counted and analysed in relation to each other. The study showed that the most frequent intentional strategy was retrieval, and that the strategies noticing, and retention also were detected in the majority of the exercises. Varied meeting and use were, however, identified in less than half of the exercises. The study’s conclusion is that all studied strategies were detected in the material. However, for students to practise all strategies equally, teachers need to provide them with additional teaching material.
