Abstract [en]

Swedish trotting racing draws significant attention and participation across the country. With nearly 875 race days annually and a million visitors, the sport embodies a blend of tradition, excitement, and community. However, the welfare of trotting horses within this industry is a topic of increasing concern. This master thesis aims to explore the perceptions of various stakeholders regarding horse welfare risks associated with trotting racing. Through surveys and expert opinions, prevalent welfare issues were identified, ranging from inadequate environmental conditions to concerns about health, behaviour, and training practices. Stakeholders highlighted neglect, doping, and injuries as significant risks impacting both horse welfare and the industry's social license to operate (SLO). The findings underscore the importance of prioritizing welfare among racehorses and implementing targeted interventions to address these challenges, ensuring the sustainability and ethical integrity of Swedish trotting racing.
