Abstract [en]
Background: As the global population ages, healthcare systems face escalating demands in elderlycare. By 2050, one-fifth of the global population will be over 60, necessitating comprehensivepreparation. In Sweden, with significant demographic shifts and exacerbated deficiencies during theCOVID-19 pandemic, challenges abound. Resource shortage and time inefficiency pose hurdles indelivering quality care, particularly in home care settings. Innovative solutions, such as different typesof Elderly care system application offers promising avenues to enhance efficiency and thereby qualityin elderly care, addressing the sectors multitude challenges.Aim: This study explores the role of time and care applications within elderly care systems,considering the challenges and opportunities presented by technology. The aim is to understand howthese systems can enhance efficiency and thereby provide insights in improve caregiving processes.By examining digital services used by caregivers, investigate how resource utilization processes couldbe streamlining, and identifying support requirements for personnel, the study seeks to provideinsights for decision-makers in improving the elderly care operations.Method: In this study focusing on the operational efficiency of elderly care, a qualitative researchapproach is used, particularly focusing on the use of time and care system applications. Through semistructured interviews, managers, and caregivers from two medium-sized elder care organizationsprovide diverse insights into the subject matter. The subsequent analysis of interview transcripts,guided by a theoretical framework and also complemented by insights from previous research, servesto deepen the understanding of topic themes. To uphold the integrity of the study, ethical measures areapplied, ensuring participant confidentiality and fairness throughout the research process.Results: Guided by Sociotechnical Theory, key themes highlight the intricate relationship betweentechnology and personnel in elder care organizations. It further delves into organizational use ofspecific applications like the Life Care Mobile application (ParaGå app) and ParaGå Administrationplatform. Findings are organized around three main themes, illuminate managers and nursesperspectives on technology as a complement, functional design, and continuous development. Thesefindings broader the understanding and may give further insight for decision-makers in improving theelderly care operations.Conclusion: As this study investigates into the usage of time and care applications in elderly care, it’srevealing the intricate interplay between technology and human-centric caregiving practices. Thestudy advocates for a more matching integration of technology in elderly care, fostering innovationand collaboration to enhance caregiving efficacy and thereby improve the caregiving quality of theelderly. Managers and employees emphasize the central importance of the integrated use of the digitalapplications. Their experiences and statements regarding adjustments in the applications indicate aneed for similar modifications and changes. The importance of ongoing support and training in theapplications also constitutes an essential part of the need for success. By continuously enhancing usersskills and understanding of the digital tools, an efficient and productive work environment is ensured,where technology can be fully utilized to support the organizations goals and needs. For futureresearch directions suggest avenues for exploring long-term impacts on caregiver well-being, thebroader intersection of technology and person-centered care, regulatory frameworks, emergingtechnologies, and prioritizing the perspectives of elderly individuals to ensure inclusive and equitabletechnology adoption in elderly care.
