Abstract [en]

This research analyses the discourse used in three news outlets, The New York Times, the Tehran Times and Al Jazeera to present the victim image of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since October 2023. Analysing a total of 75 articles mentioning the victims and the casualties in the heading, the research is conducted using discourse analysis to examine how language is utilised to construct the victim narrative and how it changes as the death toll increases between October 2023 and March 2024. The framing theory is utilised to analyse the frames that emerge from the discourse and the narrative constructed. The findings indicate variations in how the three news media constructs the discourse and frames the conflict, uncovering underlying biases. The results show a change in the narrative, particularly from The New York Times that initially uses a neutral stance toward the Palestinian victim narrative that shifts to empathetic tone over time. The Tehran Times partiality towards Palestinian continues, while Al Jazeera’s neutral coverage also changes toward empathetic tone.
