The chapter highlights the interest and conditions for higher education among prospective students in rural areas. It is based on a qualitative study conducted at Linnaeus University and Campus Västervik. During the study, 26 upper secondary school students and 8 adult education students from three rural municipalities were interviewed. The interviews were processed, analysed, and interpreted to shed light on the phenomenon that the choice of education is a life decision for young people in rural areas. Interests and conditions are complex dimensions that influence young people's life choices regarding higher education in rural areas. It is important to consider these dimensions to create more inclusive and accessible learning environments for all students, regardless of where they live. To support prospective students in rural municipalities in reaching their full educational potential, navigating the academic world, and making well-informed decisions about higher education, it is important to take into account the four aspects discussed in this chapter: range of courses and programmes offered, proximity and distance to studies, the relationship with academia, and the educational background of family and friends. These aspects are crucial for shaping more tailored and supportive measures in rural contexts. The study is concluded with two questions directed at professionals who work, or will work, with young people in rural areas: 1) How can organisations work on designing more tailored and supportive measures to facilitate access to higher education for young people in rural areas? 2) How can tailored and supportive measures be developed to assist young people in rural areas who are considering higher education?

Kapitlet belyser intressen och förutsättningar för högre utbildning bland blivande studenter på landsbygden. Kapitlet är baserat på en kvalitativ studie som genomförts vid Linnéuniversitetet och Campus Västervik. Under studien intervjuades 26 gymnasieelever och 8 komvuxelever i tre landsbygdskommuner. Intervjuerna bearbetades, analyserades och tolkades för att kunna belysa fenomenet – att valet av utbildning är ett livsval för landsbygdens unga. Intressen och förutsättningar är komplexa dimensioner som påverkar livsvalen hos de unga på landsbygden gällande högre utbildning. Det är viktigt att ta hänsyn till dessa dimensioner för att skapa mer inkluderande och tillgängliga utbildningsmiljöer för alla studenter oavsett var de bor. För att underlätta för blivande studenter i landsbygdskommuner så att de kan nå sin fulla utbildningspotential, navigera i den akademiska världen och göra välgrundade beslut om högre utbildning är det viktigt att beakta de fyra aspekter som behandlats i detta kapitel: utbud av utbildning, närhet och avstånd till studier, relationen till akademin samt familjens och vänners utbildningsbakgrund – dessa är viktiga aspekter vid det framtida arbetet för att utforma mer anpassade och stödjande åtgärder i landsbygdskontexter. Studien avslutas med två frågor till professionella aktörer som arbetar, eller kommer att arbeta, med ungdomar på landsbygden: 1) Hur kan verksamheter arbeta med utformning av mer anpassade och stödjande åtgärder för att underlätta för landsbygdens unga som överväger att studera inom högre utbildning? 2) Hur kan anpassade och stödjande åtgärder formas för att underlätta för landsbygdens unga som överväger att studera inom högre utbildning?
