The use of high-frequency words to facilitate the acquisition of a second language : Particularly, the development of lexical competence in the Spanish as a Foreign Language classroom (English)
Abstract [es]

Abstract [en]

This study examines how the use of high-frequency words can facilitate the acquisition of Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL) in the Swedish school context. A mixed-method approach (teacher interviews, student vocabulary testing, and textbook lexical mapping) was used to compare the acquired data with the list of the 1,000 most common Spanish words provided by the Royal Spanish Academy (known as RAE). The results reveal that although textbooks include many of these high-frequency words, the authors of the textbook prioritize semantic vocabulary (nouns, verbs, adjectives) over grammatical vocabulary (prepositions, conjunctions), which is essential for fluent communication. The vocabulary testing results show that students have greater difficulty with grammatical words, limiting their lexical competence. The study concludes that repetition and contextualized teaching are key to developing lexical competence. It proposes reviewing the lexical content of teaching materials and focusing more on the functional use of the most frequent words to improve Spanish comprehension and production in the SFL classroom.
