This paper proposes a taxonomy for understanding Swedish fika, drawing on five interrelated dimensions: social, culinary, temporal, spatial, and symbolic. While fika has gained prominence in both research and place marketing, definitions remain inconsistent, ranging from a simple coffee break to a culturally significant social ritual. By examining how these dimensions combine in different contexts—home, workplace, and café—the study reveals that no single element suffices; rather, specific combinations qualify an event as fika. The taxonomy enables the differentiation of various forms of fika, while simultaneously revealing their least determinate commonalities.
