This paper is about changes of meanings of an expression, the double competence, often used as a demand of qualification when professors of ”Pedagogik” are recruited. Material used was all written expert assessments of applicants ́qualifications from 65 competitions between 1910 and 1998. The assessments were analysed, using dimensions as width, depth and quality. Main outcomes: disagreement on meanings between experts up to World War II, struggles between experts about the territory during 50thies and 60thies, superficial consensus on ”the system view” during 70thies and early 80thies and a more complex emphasis on quality the last decades.
