Once upon a time, there was a rasist... : A narrative analysis of the Billström scandal in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter (English)
Abstract [en]
The 18th of March 2013, an interview with the immigration minister of Sweden, was published in one of Sweden's largest newspapers. The interview consisted of a number of questions regarding Sweden's immigration policy, the issue with undocumented refugees in particular. The minister stated “Sometimes we have the picture that the hidden refugee is staying with a nice, blond lady in her fifties or sixties who wants to help. But that is not the case. Most of them are staying with their fellow citizens who are in fact not blond or blue eyed.”
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the controversy of the statement through theories of scandal, agenda-setting and framing. The conflict that is presented in both newspapers is the question of if the minister should resign or not.
The method we have used is the narrative analysis, which we apply on both Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter, and how their head articles show a certain angle of the scandal. The result of our study is that the reader will visualize two different views of the scandal depending on which newspaper they read. Aftonbladet shows a more bias picture towards the minister and claims that he is a full-blooded racist. Dagens Nyheter’s outcome is that Billström is incompetent and a fool.
