Do tapeworms manipulate sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) by making them more risk-taking?

Abstract [en]

The tapeworm Schistocephalus solidus is a parasite that exerts parasite increased trophic transmission (PITT). It manipulates its intermediate host so that it becomes more vulnerable to predation by the next host. Such manipulations can be expressed as reduced or increased fear; it can make its host more risk-taking and may change its personality. S. solidus has the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) as one intermediate host. This study aimed to investigate if the parasite affected two types of behaviours in the stickleback, and also if hunger affected the studied behaviours. The first test was performed in an arena with a sheltered and an exposed side, the latter contained a food source. This arena was intended to show how the stickleback evaluates risk in relation to foraging. The second test used a simple labyrinth to investigate how sticklebacks explore a novel area. My results showed that hunger had no effect but that infected sticklebacks were significantly more risk-taking than uninfected when they evaluate risk in relation to foraging. In the second arena the infected fish explored the labyrinth quicker than the uninfected. It can therefore be assumed that S. solidus manipulates its host to become more risk-taking. However, there was a high prevalence of S. solidus-infections and the uninfected group was therefore small and care should be taken when interpreting these results. One way to gain further knowledge about the behaviours observed in this study would be to investigate experimentally infected sticklebacks.

Bandmasken Schistocephalus solidus är en parasit som utövar ‘parasite increased trophic transmission’ (PITT). Den manipulerar sin intermediära värd så att dess risk att bli uppäten av parasitens nästa värd ökar. Sådana manipulationer kan uttryckas som minskad eller ökad rädsla, till exempel kan parasiten göra sin värd mer risktagande eller förändra dess personlighet. S. solidus har storspigg (Gasterosteus aculeatus) som en intermediär värd. Den här studiens mål var att undersöka om parasiten påverkade två typer av beteende hos storspigg samt om hunger hade betydelse för dessa beteenden. Det första testet utfördes i en arena med en skyddad sida och en exponerad sida som även innehöll mat. Arenan var designad för att studera hur storspigg väger risk mot födosök. Det andra testet undersökte hur storspigg utforskade en enkel labyrint. Mina resultat visade att hunger inte hade någon effekt men att infekterade storspigg var signifikant mer risktagande än oinfekterade i sitt födosök. I den andra arenan utforskade infekterade storspigg labyrinten snabbare än oinfekterade. Det är därför möjligt att anta att S. solidus manipulerar sin värd så att den blir mer risktagande. Däremot var det en hög prevalens av S. solidus-infektioner och den oinfekterade gruppen var liten, vilket gör att resultaten ska tolkas med försiktighet. För att fördjupa kunskapen om de observerade beteenden bör experimentellt infekterade storspigg studeras.
