Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Capital structure has a major impact on investment, risk management andvaluation of companies. In good times, the availability of debt financing large which gives companies the possibility of using high financial leverage. In bad times debt financing becomes a huge risk. Previous research dealing with explanatory factors regarding capital structure often depends only on large corporations. This even despite the fact that SMEs represents a significant part the economy and employ a large part of the population.
Purpose: The overall purpose of this paper is to contribute to the knowledge of what explains the small Swedish companies’ choice of capital structure. This will be done by testing factors affecting the choice of capital structure and analyze the results based on the theory presented. This study also aims to compare the result with Psillaki and Daskalakis (2009) study of France, Greece, Portugal and Italy to investigate whether there are international differences in small firms' choice of capital structure.
Method: This thesis is has a deductive research method and is based on existing theory and previous research in the area of capital structure. The theory is used to identify explanatory factors for Swedish small firms' choice of capital structure. An analysis of data for Swedish small businesses are the basis for the analysis and conclusion.
Conclusions: This study shows a positive relationship between growth factors and asset allocation and a negative correlation for the factors of size and profitability. There are international differences for small firms' choice of capital structure but also several similarities. The results regarding how well the theories explain the Swedish small firms'choice of capital structure vary.
