Mediation of the medieval town of Oslo through the years
This text elucidates the history of mediation of the medieval town of Oslo, Norway. Already in the 1850s the interest rose for mediating the history of this medieval town of great importance in the history of Norway. Since huge parts of the medieval town was damaged by modern railways, industry and roads, it has been a difficult task to communicate the value of preserving the site. Although during the 20th century an intensive work has been done that has saved parts of the town until today. Through digs, jubilees, parks, re-enactment and museum plans a con- tinuous flow of committed work has been performed. This work is still on-going, and it is claimed that it is the long-time, continuous work and engagement, not necessarily the preservation efforts as such, that makes an old town come to life. Another claim is the importance of a long-time perspective that allows the full and diverse story of Oslo to be told, including the way back to the Middle Ages from present times that also takes into account the experiences of today’s citizens.
