    Abstract [en]

We present a selection of results based on data taken in 1997 with the 302-PMT Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array-B10 ("AMANDA-B10") array. Atmospheric neutrinos created in the northern hemisphere are observed indirectly through their charged current interactions which produce relativistic, Cherenkov-light-emitting upgoing muons in the South Pole ice cap. The reconstructed angular distribution of these events is in good agreement with expectation and demonstrates the viability of this ice-based device as a neutrino telescope. Studies of nearly vertical upgoing muons limit the available parameter space for WIMP dark matter under the assumption that WIMPS are trapped in the earth's gravitational potential well and annihilate with one another near the earth's center.

    Abstract [en]

We review the status of the AMANDA neutrino telescope. We present resultsobtained from the four-string prototype array AMANDA-B4 and describe themethods of track reconstruction and neutrino event separation. We give also firstresults of the analysis of the 10-string detector AMANDA-B10, in particular onatmospheric neutrinos and the search for magnetic monopoles. We sketch thefuture schedule on the way to a cube kilometer telescope at the South Pole,ICECUBE.

THE LARGE AREA TELESCOPE ON THE FERMI GAMMA-RAY SPACE TELESCOPE MISSION2009In: Astrophysical Journal, ISSN 0004-637X, E-ISSN 1538-4357, Vol. 697, no 2, p. 1071-1102Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Large Area Telescope (Fermi/LAT, hereafter LAT), the primary instrument on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi) mission, is an imaging, wide field-of-view (FoV), high-energy gamma-ray telescope, covering the energy range from below 20 MeV to more than 300 GeV. The LAT was built by an international collaboration with contributions from space agencies, high-energy particle physics institutes, and universities in France, Italy, Japan, Sweden, and the United States. This paper describes the LAT, its preflight expected performance, and summarizes the key science objectives that will be addressed. On-orbit performance will be presented in detail in a subsequent paper. The LAT is a pair-conversion telescope with a precision tracker and calorimeter, each consisting of a 4 x 4 array of 16 modules, a segmented anticoincidence detector that covers the tracker array, and a programmable trigger and data acquisition system. Each tracker module has a vertical stack of 18 (x, y) tracking planes, including two layers (x and y) of single-sided silicon strip detectors and high-Z converter material (tungsten) per tray. Every calorimeter module has 96 CsI(Tl) crystals, arranged in an eight-layer hodoscopic configuration with a total depth of 8.6 radiation lengths, giving both longitudinal and transverse information about the energy deposition pattern. The calorimeter's depth and segmentation enable the high-energy reach of the LAT and contribute significantly to background rejection. The aspect ratio of the tracker (height/width) is 0.4, allowing a large FoV (2.4 sr) and ensuring that most pair-conversion showers initiated in the tracker will pass into the calorimeter for energy measurement. Data obtained with the LAT are intended to (1) permit rapid notification of high-energy gamma-ray bursts and transients and facilitate monitoring of variable sources, (2) yield an extensive catalog of several thousand high-energy sources obtained from an all-sky survey, (3) measure spectra from 20 MeV to more than 50 GeV for several hundred sources, (4) localize point sources to 0.3-2 arcmin, (5) map and obtain spectra of extended sources such as SNRs, molecular clouds, and nearby galaxies, (6) measure the diffuse isotropic gamma-ray background up to TeV energies, and (7) explore the discovery space for dark matter.

Status of the Neutrino Telescope AMANDA: Monopoles and WIMPS2001In: Dark Matter in Astro- and Particle Physics: Proceedings of the International Conference DARK 2000 Heidelberg, Germany, 10–14 July 2000 / [ed] H. V. Klapdor-Kleingrothaus, Springer, 2001, p. 699-706Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The neutrino telescope AMANDA has been set up at the geographical South Pole as first step to a neutrino telescope of the scale of one cubic kilometer, which is the canonical size for a detector sensitive to neutrinos from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB) and Topological Defects (TD). The location and depth in which the detector is installed is given by the requirement to detect neutrinos by the Cherenkov light produced by their reaction products and to keep the background due to atmospheric muons as small as possible. However, a detector optimized for this purpose is also capable to detect the bright Cherenkov light from relativistic Monopoles and neutrino signals from regions with high gravitational potential, where WIMPS are accumulated and possibly annihilate. Both hypothetical particles might contribute to the amount of dark matter. Therefore here a report about the status of the experiment (autumn 2000) and about the status of the search for these particles with the AMANDA B10 sub-detector is given.

Radiation hardness tests of CSI(Tl) crystals for the GLAST electromagnetic calorimeter2003In: Proceedings of 28th International Cosmic Ray Conference, 2003, p. 2787-2790Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The electromagnetic calorimeter of the Gamma ray Large Area Space Telescope(GLAST) consists of 16 towers of CsI(Tl) crystals. Each tower contains 8layers of crystals (each 326.0×26.7×19.9 mm3) arranged in a hodoscopic fashion. The crystals are read out at both ends with PIN photodiodes. Crystals producedby Amcrys-H (Ukraine) are used. As a part of the quality control procedureduring crystal production, samples from the uncut boules are systematically irradiatedwith gamma rays from a 60Co source. Studies have also been carried outto verify the correspondence between the post-irradiation properties of the boulesamples and the full size crystals which are subsequently cut from the boule. Thefull size crystals have also been irradiated with a 180 MeV proton beam and theradiation induced attenuation measured.

A Mobile Maintenance Decision Support System2008In: Maintenance and Asset Management Journal, ISSN 1748-5290, Vol. 23, no 2, p. 42-48Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The development is reported of an e-maintenance system, ie a mobile maintenance decision supportsystem based on web and mobile technologies. The problem of the lack of experts to troubleshoot a fault ina machine is a long-standing one. It has led to the application of artificial intelligence and, later, distributedartificial intelligence for machine condition monitoring and diagnosis. Recently, web technology, alongwith wireless communication, is emerging as a potential tool in maintenance, facilitating acquisition ofthe desired information by the relevant personnel at any time, wherever they may be. It has been foundthat with the emergence of the new Information and Communications Technology (ICT) new conceptshave started to appear, such as e-manufacturing, e-business and e-maintenance. The paper begins byshowing the Web and Mobile architecture and then the ICT tools that are used for communication amongthe different layers of the system and the client machines. This is followed by a demonstration of the useof the system with a faulty bearing simulated signal. In addition, it is explained that a CMMS, ie a mobilework management system, has been tested, with successful results. Finally, it is shown how a mobileemulator was used to perfect the system for different requirements and how this was then tested on apersonal digital assistant (PDA).

    Abstract [en]

The education program System design at the University of Kalmar has since it’s beginning been missing a near by studio for it’s students studying towards audio and music. In the choice of examination project I would take upon this task, which was long wanted for the teachers and students at the university’s Musikhuset.

Musikhuset became the buyer of the project, and the studio was to be installed at their premises. Unfortunately, the project got jammed by the university’s financial savings calculations, and was due to this delayed in the end for 11 weeks. The delay even caused several details to be cut out from the project and the end result didn’t become as glamorous as planned. Even tough the installation was carried out with a good result.

Today there is a complete system for recording and editing audio, and is used by teachers and students.

We present new data taken with the AMANDA-II neutrino telescope array. The AMANDA-II upgrade was completed at the beginning of 2000. It significantly extends the sensitivity of the 10-string AMANDA-B10 detector to high- and ultrahigh-energy neutrino fluxes into regions of interest for probing current astrophysical models which remain unexplored by other experiments. The Swedish hardwood sawmill industry: Structure present status and development potential2008In: Wood Material Science & Engineering, ISSN 1748-0272, E-ISSN 1748-0280, Vol. 3, no 3/4, p. 94-101Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study describes the Swedish hardwood sawmill industry with respect to its structure, raw material, production and market conditions in order to seek ways of increasing the competitiveness of the industry. Fifteen sawmills were studied through observations and interviews. The Swedish hardwood sawmill industry creates job opportunities in sparsely populated areas and uses a biological raw material which is important for environmental biological diversity. Any decrease in the use of this material will mean a drop in the incentive for forest owners to cultivate deciduous forests. Today, the hardwood sawmill industry is experiencing problems in securing the supply of raw material of the desired quality, i.e. without knots and discoloured heartwood (red-heart or brown-heart). To increase the competitiveness of the Swedish hardwood sawmill industry, the raw material supply must be secured. Production should be geared towards products demanded by the market, and new markets need to be entered.

Observation of high energy atmospheric neutrinos with AMANDA2000In: AIP Conference Proceedings, American Institute of Physics (AIP), 2000, no 549, p. 823-827Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In 1997 the Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) started operating with 10 strings. In an analysis of data taken during the first year of operation 188 atmospheric neutrino candidates were found. Their zenith angle distribution agrees with expectations based on Monte Carlo simulations. A preliminary upper limit is given on a diffuse flux of high energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.
